The Tank Material Depends on the Chemical.

Using the wrong tank material for a chemical is how spills happen. We match material to chemical before anything ships — here's what each option covers.

HDPE Chemical Tank

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is the most widely used material for chemical storage tanks in the UAE. It handles most acids, alkalis, and chlorinated compounds up to moderate concentrations, and it's lighter and cheaper than fibreglass or steel for the same capacity.

The weak points: concentrated oxidising acids (strong HNO₃, high-concentration H₂SO₄), aromatic solvents, and halogenated solvents. For those, you need GRP with a vinyl ester liner or a cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) tank. We confirm chemical compatibility before any order.

GRP / FRP Chemical Tank

Glass reinforced plastic (GRP) — also called FRP — is the choice for larger bulk chemical storage tanks, aggressive solvents, and concentrated acids that HDPE can't handle. The key is the liner: a vinyl ester resin liner resists a wide range of acids and solvents; an isophthalic liner works for milder chemicals.

GRP tanks are structurally stronger than polyethylene for the same wall thickness, which matters for large vertical tanks and anything above 10,000 litres. They're also the standard for chemical process tanks and industrial bulk storage across UAE.

Polypropylene Chemical Tank

Polypropylene (PP) is harder and more heat-resistant than HDPE, and better suited to certain aromatic chemicals and strong oxidising acids at moderate temperatures. It's widely used for chemical mixing tanks, acid dip tanks, and chemical process vessels where HDPE might soften or swell.

Polypropylene tanks are common in electroplating, surface treatment, chemical stripping, and pool chemical applications. Both natural (translucent) and opaque grades are available. Can be supplied with agitators, heating elements, and bespoke fittings.

Stainless Steel 316 Chemical Tank

Stainless steel 316 (SS316) is specified where temperature matters, where the chemical demands it, or where food-grade or pharmaceutical standards apply. It handles organic acids, alcohols, some solvents, and high-temperature process chemicals that neither HDPE nor GRP are rated for.

The weak points: chloride-containing solutions at high temperature (risk of pitting corrosion), and hydrochloric acid at any concentration. For those, you're looking at Hastelloy or lined GRP. For everything else, SS316 is the cleanest option — easy to inspect, easy to clean, and accepted by every UAE authority for food-grade and pharmaceutical applications.

Chemical vs. Tank Material — Quick Reference.

This is a guide, not a final specification. Concentration, temperature, and trace contaminants all affect compatibility. We verify material selection for every order before anything ships.

Chemical HDPE GRP/FRP Polypropylene SS 316 Notes
Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl / bleach) UV-stabilised tank recommended; SS pits at high conc.
Hydrochloric acid (HCl) — all conc. Never store HCl in SS; HDPE or PP standard choice
Sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) — dilute (<70%) GRP needs vinyl ester liner; SS limited below 10%
Sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) — concentrated (>70%) GRP vinyl ester liner only; or XLPE — call us
Sodium hydroxide / caustic soda (NaOH) Most materials suitable; avoid aluminium fittings
Chlorine solution / chlorinated water SS risk of pitting at elevated chloride levels
Acetone / ketone solvents SS316 is the standard choice for ketone solvents
Ammonia (anhydrous / solution) Anhydrous ammonia requires pressure-rated vessel
Fertiliser solutions (liquid NPK) HDPE most common for agricultural mixing tanks
Ethanol / alcohols All materials suitable; consider vapour management

It depends on the chemical. HDPE (high-density polyethylene) handles most acids, alkalis, and chlorinated compounds and is the default choice for tanks up to 50,000 litres. GRP/FRP with a vinyl ester liner is used for larger tanks, aggressive solvents, and higher concentrations that HDPE can't handle. Polypropylene covers applications needing higher heat resistance. Stainless steel 316 is used for food-grade applications, organic acids, and alcohols. We match material to chemical for every order — we don't let the wrong tank ship.
Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) needs a UV-stabilised, dark-coloured HDPE tank. Light accelerates NaOCl decomposition — you lose concentration and generate chlorine gas if the tank is clear or light-coloured and exposed to UAE sun. The tank should be vented (NaOCl off-gasses chlorine over time), and all fittings should be PVDF, polypropylene, or FRP — no metal. We stock UV-stabilised sodium hypochlorite storage tanks from 200L to 20,000L.
Dilute sulfuric acid (up to roughly 70%) can be stored in HDPE or polypropylene tanks. Concentrated sulfuric acid (above 70%) generates heat on dilution and is too aggressive for standard HDPE — it requires either a cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) tank or a GRP tank with a vinyl ester resin liner. Never store concentrated sulfuric acid in standard polyethylene or in stainless steel. Send us your concentration and we confirm the correct tank.
A chemical dosing tank — sometimes called a chemical day tank, chemical feed tank, or chemical inductor tank — is a small-capacity tank holding a pre-diluted chemical solution ready for injection into a process. You need one if your process uses a dosing pump to inject chemicals into a water system, cooling tower, pool, or process line. The tank is sized to hold the daily or shift dose volume plus a safety buffer. Typical sizes in UAE are 200L, 500L, and 1,000L.
UAE environmental regulations require secondary containment for bulk storage of hazardous chemicals — this covers most acids, concentrated alkalis, solvents, and petroleum products. Secondary containment can be a double wall tank (containment built into the tank itself) or a bunded area (concrete bund around a single-wall tank). For small indoor tanks, a drip tray is sometimes sufficient. We advise on what applies to your chemical and volume — the answer changes depending on the substance and quantity.
GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) and FRP (Fibre Reinforced Plastic) refer to the same family of composite materials — fibreglass laminate with a resin matrix. The terms are used interchangeably. What actually matters for chemical storage is the resin type: isophthalic resin for milder chemicals, vinyl ester for more aggressive acids and solvents, and epoxy resin for some specific applications. When you see "FRP chemical tank" in a spec, confirm the liner resin before accepting a quote.
We stock chemical tanks from 100 litres (roughly 20 gallons) up to 50,000 litres (roughly 13,000 gallons). Common stock sizes are 200L, 500L, 1,000L, 2,000L, 5,000L, 10,000L, and 20,000L. IBC chemical totes (1,000L in a steel cage frame) are available for transport and temporary storage. Anything above 20,000 litres or with non-standard dimensions is manufactured to order — lead time is typically 3–6 weeks depending on material and specification.
